غزل الوكيل كتابه بكتابة على الكتابة٬ فيكشف لنا أوجه جديدة لمحفوظ وعالمه السردي علي طريقة مقامات التصوف. حيث قسم الكتاب إلي مقامات: مقام الأسرار٬ مقام الكمال٬ ومقام الوصل. بل وقدم تحيليلا أقرب لرؤية محفوظ عن شخصية "داود يزيد المصري" والتي أعاد السيناريست "محسن زايد" إنتاجها وصياغتها. تلك الشخصية بكل متناقضاتها٬ والتي أصابت كل من تابعها بالحيرة وربما القلق أيضا. يذهب الوكيل إلي أن: حكاية داود المصري في حديث الصباح والمساء توقفنا علي الطبيعة المتناقضة في روحه٬ كنتيجة للمفارقة بين نشأته الشعبية الفقيرة في سوق الزلط٬ وتعليمه العالي بدراسة الطب٬ فتقلب علي حد وصف محفوظ بين التراث والمعاصرة٬ وحاول الإنتساب إلي الطبقات العليا حين تزوج من سنية الوراق ابنة الثري الذي كان أبوه يعمل عنده٬ كأنما يسعي لتعويض نقص في طفولته٬ ثم عاد وتزوج من الجارية آدم٬ فسكن إليها حتي أنه شيد لها ضريحا مهيبا بعد موتها٬ كأنه يشيد ضريحا لذاته التي فقدها منذ اختطفه عسكر محمد علي وهو يمشي مع أخيه عزيز في سوق الزلط.
