تعدُّ كالوكين روايةً دِيستوبيةً تغوصُ في تفاصيل دولةٍ مستقبليّةٍ مفترضةٍ اسمها «الدولة العالمية»؛ وهي دولةٌ بوليسيةٌ تتحكَّم في أدقِّ تفاصيل حياة الفرد وعلاقاته بمن حوله، وحتَّى علاقته بزوجته وأولاده. وإيغالًا في السيطرة والتحكم، يكتشفُ كيميائيٍ موالٍ للدولة – رغم أن الشكوك تتنازعه أحيانًا – عقارًا أخضرَ فاتحًا من شأنه أن يجعل المتّهمَ يعترفُ بكل ما احتفظ به لنفسه من أسرار وما اختصه لها من لحظاتٍ ما كان له أن يبوح بها على الملأ. كَتَبَتْ بوي الرواية على لسان الكيميائي ليو كال؛ الذي جاء اسم العقار المُكتشف وعنوان الرواية من اسمه. وهو يرويها بصورة مذكراتٍ عكف على وضعها في كتابٍ وهو في محبسه. ثم تتوالى المفاجآت والأحداث في الرواية-المذكَّرَات. وثمَّةَ خيطٌ رفيعٌ من الرعب يتلبَّس الأحداثَ دون أن نرى جريمةً تُرتَكَب أو قطرةَ دمٍ تُرَاق. وما من شكِّ أنَّ الإسقاطات التاريخية، لا بل حتَّى والمعاصرة منها التي قد تصلح لزماننا هذا، تنبجس مثل ينبوع ماءٍ بين صفحةٍ وأخرى.
