لم يُكتب الذيوع لمتن منظوم في النحو العربي كله مثلما كُتب لألفية ابن مالك (ت 672 هـ)، المسمَّاة بالخلاصة؛ لأنه اختصرها عن أرجوزته "الكافية الشافية" جمعَ فيها علمَي النحو والصرف، فجاءت الخلاصة في ألف بيتٍ وبيتينِ. ثم توالى العلماء على الألفية، فصنفوا قرابة خمسين ومائتَي كتابٍ من شرح وحاشية وتقرير وتهذيب واستدراك... وكان في طليعة هؤلاء الشرَّاح ابن أُم قاسم المرادي (ت 749 هـ)، وهو من أكابر تلاميذ أبي حيان، وكان المرادي يستعين في شرح الألفية بأقوال ابن مالك نفسه في كتبه الأخرى، مع الاستعانة بكلام غيره. ونظرًا لأهمية شرح المرادي هذا، توفَّر عليه الأُشموني في حاشيته على الألفية، فاختصره - غالبًا - بغير عزو. هذا فضلًا عن الحواشي والاستدراكات التي أُلفت على شرح المرادي دلالة على عظم مكانته. ولقد تميزت هذه الطبعة باعتمادها على أربع نسخ خطية، والتعليق على النص بما ينفع القارئ بعيدًا عن الإسهاب الممل، وخُتمت بستة فهارس فنية تكشف كنوز الكتاب للمطالع.
