تعبر حالة حضور المدونات (blogs) فى الفضاء الإليكترونى عن ظاهرة بحثية جديرة بالرصد والتحليل والفهم، إذ أصبحت تتيح مساحات للتعبير عن حيز متسع من القضايا والأحداث المتعلقة بمختلف الشئون العامة، ليتأكد عبر متابعة أدوارها أن عددا منها يتجاوز نطاق كونه تعبيرا ذاتيا عن رؤى ومواقف شخصية للعمل كساحة يتم من خلالها عرض وإدارة نقاش عام وبلورة توجهات بشأن قضايا ذات أولويات جماهيرية ذلك أن "ما يمنح المدونات أهميتها كوسيلة إعلامية جديدة هو تيسيرها لكل الوظائف الإعلامية المتعارف عليها فضلا عن تطوير سبل تأديتها وزيادة التفاعلية و تواجد صفة الفورية فى عملها وتعدد مراكز الإتصال والمشاركة فى مناقشة الشأن العام و بصورة غير مسبوقة"
ويستخدم مصطلح مجال المدونات (blogospher) للإشارة عادة الى المدونات السياسية وقد صكه William quick عام 2001 للإشارة إلى المطارحات السياسية التى يشارك القراء فيها أما المجال (Sphere) فيقصد به هنا الشبكة التى تنشأ على الإنترنت من مجموعة المدونات السياسية فى مجتمع ما، ويتم عبرها حوار جماهيرى بشأن القضايا وبذلك تمثل المدونات مجالات عامة يتم فيها التعبير عن الأراء ومناقشتها وتحليل الأحداث كما يمكن داخلها مراقبة أساليب عمل السياسيين بل و مراقبة أداء وسائل الإعلام ذاتها.
