تدور الرواية حول مؤلفة تفوز برحلة إلى سويسرا للإقامة في بيت الأدباء هناك، وتحاول كتابة رواية جديدة لها. أثناء وجودها هناك تبدأ في استرجاع ذكرياتها وتحكي لنا عن الأسباب التي انتهت بها إلى الفوز بهذه الرحلة.
الرواية عبارة عن مجموعة من الشخصيات التي تحكي كل واحدة منهن الحياة بطريقتها ومن وجهة نظرها، وهي لا تتوقف عند طبقة اجتماعية معينة بل تتناول خلفيات اجتماعية مختلفة.
بطلة الرواية؛ المؤلفة التي فازت بالرحلة، وهي شخصية الرواية الرئيسية، تبدأ بالكتابة عن حياتها وعن أكثر شخصية أثرت في حياتها وأوصلتها إلى ما هي عليه اليوم، وهي الكاتبة "بداية الألفي"، التي كانت تستخدم بطلة الرواية في أعمالها كشخصية ثانوية، لذا فعندما تصل البطلة إلى سويسرا تستخدم "بداية الألفي" في روايتها كذلك، المثير في الأمر أن البطلة لها نفس الإسم، ألا وهو "بداية".
تبدأ "بداية مهران" الكتابة عن مجموعتين من النساء في "جيمنازيوم"، المجموعة الأولى تتكون من سيدات راقيات يذهبن إلى الجيم لقضاء الوقت، والمجموعة الثانية هي النساء العاملات هناك. كل امرأة لها فصل يحكي قصتها، وفي أوقات معينة نجد أن حياة شخصيتين أو أكثر ترتبطان ببعضهم.
إيقاع الرواية سلس، وفصولها تنقسم بين فصل يحدث في مصر وآخر في سويسرا، وسيلاحظ القاريء كيف أن بعض التفاصيل في حيوات الشخصيات شبيهة بتفاصيل من حياة "بداية مهران"، وما يثير الإعجاب بهذه الرواية كذلك، إضافة إلى طبيعتها الأنثوية، هو استخدام المؤلفة للتناص في روايتها، فهي تقتبس أبياتًا شعرية من محمود درويش ومن صلاح جاهين، وغيرهم.
