"في طفولتها، عاشت مهرنوش وإخوتها حياةً مرفّهةً وهانئةً، واكتملت سعادة أُسْرتها برحيل الشاه الذي ناضل والداها ضدّه، إلّا أنّ التحوّلات السياسيّة الّلاحقة، وتجنيد الأطفال في الحرب الإيرانيّة-العراقيّة دفَعا والديها إلى الهرب من إيران؛ لحماية أطفالهما.
في عام 1986 حدثت كارثة التسرّب الإشعاعيّ في محطّة الطاقة النوويّة في تشيرنوبل، وتسبّبت في تحويل مدينة باريبات المجاورة إلى مدينة أشباحٍ هجرها أهلُها، لكنّ هذا الحدث الذي أشعل قلقاً دوليّاً، وتضامناً شعبيّاً حَوْل العالم، لمْ يكن سوى خبرٍ عابرٍ على التلفاز بالنسبة إلى مهرنوش الطفلة، التي كانت قد حصلت وأُسرتها في الحال على بيتهم الجديد بعد رحلة الّلجوء المريرة.
بعد قرابة ثلاثين عاماً، تحكي مهرنوش قصّتها، مقاربةً بين أهمّ حدثَيْن في طفولتها: القلق العام من الكارثة النوويّة التي تسبّبت في خسارة الآلاف لوطنهم، والرحلة الملحميّة التي خاضتها أُسْرتها: الهروب من أصفهان، وفترات اليأس في تركيا، والضياع في ألمانيا الشرقيّة، إلى حين وصولهم إلى وطنهم الجديد في ألمانيا الغربيّة؛ حيث فُتحتْ لها نافذةٌ جديدةٌ على الحياة، كأنّه قد دخل منها ملايين الفراشات الملوّنة"
