لقد أسست ثورات الربيع العربي واقعاً جديداً يطالب بالحرية والديمقراطية والتغيير، وجاء الإصلاح الإعلامي ضمن متطلبات هذه الثورات سعياً للخروج من حالة التبعية التاريخية للدولة ومراكز القوى الفاسدة في المجتمعات إلى آفاق جديدة من حرية التعبير والنشر والبث والحصول على المعلومات، كذلك أصبحت دراسة الأزمات من الدراسات التي تحظى باهتمام متزايد في العصر الحالي، وبالرغم من أهمية دور الإعلام في إدارة الأزمات؛ إلا أن علم إدارة الأزمات إعلامياً لا يزال اتجاهاً حديثاً نسبياً، وقد أشارت العديد من الدراسات التي تناولت دور الإعلام في إدارة الأزمات سواء الداخلية مثل الأزمات الاجتماعية والبيئية والصناعية أو الأزمات الخارجية الدولية إلى أهمية الدور الذي تؤديه وسائل الإعلام أثناء وبعد الأزمات، بل إن هذه النوعية من الأزمات تعتمد في إدارتها على وسائل الإعلام كأحد مكونات استراتيجية مواجهة الأزمة.
