يتناول الكتاب جذور الإضطراب في الفكر الغربي بخصوص الإسلام عبر مقاربة أفكار ثمانية فلاسفةٍ ألمان.
إن الكتاب الذي بين أيديكم - كما يقول المؤلف - ليس سعياً للدفاع عن الإسلام بل هو محاولة لتشريح وفحص ذلك الإضطراب، كما أنه لا يُقدِّم أيه حلول خلاصية لمعالجة تعقيدات وتبعات الصورة الإشكالية التي تَمثَّل بها الإسلامُ ثقافةً وشعوباً في مُؤلَّفات أولئك الفلاسفة.
يأخذ إيان ألموند القارئ في رحلة تاريخية فكرية فلسفية مثيرة، ويعرض عليه خليطاً متنافراً من الأفكار والمواقف والإنطباعات التي يخرج بعضها من الأرشيف الألماني لأول مرة، ليكتشف القارئ مدى صعوبة تحديد نسبق محدد واضح لنظرة أولئك الفلاسفة للإسلام وللشعوب المسلمة، حتى ضمن أفكار ومواقف الفيلسوف الواحد.
طريقة المؤلف في تتبّع صورة الإسلام لدى نخبة مُعتبرة من المفكرين الألمان تحرِّض القارئ على طرح التساؤلات عوضاً عن البحث عن إجابات، والتأمل في السياقات التي أَنتجت تلك الأفكار عن الإسلام عوضاً عن السعي لتفكيكها، ومحاولة الإقتراب من شخصية الفيلسوف وظروفه الإجتماعية والسياسية - التي القت بظلالها على مفارقات تصوّره لثقافة شعب مجاور لمجاله الجغرافة مقارنة بتصوّره لثقافات شعوب بعيدة عنه - عوضاً عن إصدار أحكام قيمية تحصره في زاوية الجهل وإختزال تعقيدات الآخر، وربما ما هو أسوأ كالتحيُّز والتعصُّب وخدمة أغراض إستشراقية أو إستعمارية.
ويمكن القول إن الفكرة التي قد تُسيطر على ذهن مَن ينتمي ثقافياً للمنطقة التي كان يستهدفها هؤلاء الفلاسفة بتفكيرهم وملاحظاتهم وحواشيهم، هي أن الحضور الثقافي للعالم الإسلامي في وعي النخبة الثقافية الأوروبية، كان ولا يزلا حضوراً يخضع لعدسة خاصة لا تستمد مشروعيتها بالضرورة من نجاحها في إستيعاب تعقيدات هذا العالم، بقدر ما تكتسبه من قدرتها على تحقيق وظيفة يُحددها مُستخدِم تلك العدسة؛ وظيفة لا يبدو ان الهَمَّ المعرفي يُوجهها في كل الأحوال.
