شهدتْ عُمان في ستينيات القرن المنصرم وسبعينياته ثورةً دارت رحاها في ظفار منذ عام 1965م وحتى العام 1976م، فأصبحت بذلك أطول شكل من أشكال الكفاح المسلح في تاريخ شبه الجزيرة العربية، وواحدة من أهم تمثّلات الحرب الباردة في منطقة الخليج. وانطلاقًا من ذلك كله يسعى الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا إلى استرجاع التاريخ السياسي والاجتماعي والثقافي لهذه الثورة اللافتة، كما أنه يعيد النظر في تاريخ عمان السياسي الحديث بالكشف عن الدور المركزي الذي أدّته الحركات الشعبية في تشكيل الأحداث والمآلات وتكوين الدولة الحديثة، وذلك استنادًا إلى طيف واسع من المصادر الشفوية والأرشيفية التي لم تُستنطق من قبل، العربية منها والبريطانية. وعليه، فإن الكتاب يبحث في العلاقات التي تربط ما بين المنظومات المقاومة للاستعمار العابرة للحدود، ويقدّم ظفار بوصفها شرفة يمكن من خلالها النظر إلى التقاطعات العربية مع التيارات الأفريقية-الآسيوية والجنوب-أميركية، وتبيان مركزية الارتباطات التي كانت قائمة، وما تشكّله من أهمية في التاريخ العربي الحديث.
