سعى المؤلف في هذا الكتاب إلى تأصيل تاريخ نشوء الدرعية، وظهورها على مسرح الأحداث، وتحقيق موضعها، وتاريخ قدوم جدّ الأسرة الحاكمة إليها، واستطاع المؤلف من خلال استعراض أقدم مخطوطة ورد فيها اسم الدرعية؛ كتبت في منتصف القرن التاسع الهجري، متقدمة على أقدم مصدر معروف بأكثر من قرن، أن يُثبت أن نشوء البلدة أقدم بكثير مما كان معروفًا.
كذلك بذل المؤلف جهدًا كبيرًا في تحديد المواضع والأمكنة التي ذكرها المؤرخون وكانت مسرحًا للأحداث في الدرعية، ولم يعد أغلبها معروفًا الآن؛ إما بسبب تغير أسمائها وإما لموت كبار السن الذين كانوا يعرفون موضعها بدقة.
فكان هذا الكتاب جسرًا يعبر القارئ من خلاله من كتب التاريخ وحقبة الماضي الغابر الذي تلاشت علاماته بمعظمها، ليعايش الأحداث عيانًا في أرض الواقع، فيقف عند كل معلمٍ تاريخيٍ مستشعرًا أغلب ما وقع فيه من أحداث.
