لا يزال التباين في فهم النفس الإنسانية أحد أهم العوامل المؤثرة في تقدم الطب النفسي في عصرنا الحاضر، فأي دين كرّم آلام النفس الإنسانية أكثر من بقية الأديان؟ وأي ثقافة سمت عن غيرها بتقدير روحانية المرض النفسي، وإعطاءه قيمة ومنزلة عادلة لا تقلّ عن مرض الجسد.
فبينما يشكو مريض في شرق آسيا من تأخر او تخلف مجتمعه في فهم علل النفس، هناك في أميركا يتلقى شخص آخر (سليم إلا من علل الحياة الطبيعية) تشخيصاً نفسياً وعلاجاً دوائياً ليس بحاجته، لكن الامر لا يخلو من مفارقة يائسة، فحتى مع تقدم الإنسان في سعيه لفهم الإنسان وإيصاله إلى التوازن المنشود، إلا ان ذلك لم يمنعه عن الإضرار به ودفعه نحو كمال نفسي موهوم لا وجود له.
في كتابه هذا، يدعو الدكتور آلن فرانسيس (رئيس فريق عمل الدليل التشخيصي والإحصائي الرابع) الأطباء النفسيين أولاً، ثم بقية المسؤولين في هذا المجال، غلى جانب المرضى وعائلاتهم لأن ينظروا نظرة حقيقية في كارثة تضخم التشخيص النفسي، وإستغلال شركات الادوية الكبرى في الترويج لأوبئة كاذبة، سواء في الولايات المتحدة أو بقية أنحاء العالم.
إن إيمان الفرد بإمكانية خلو الحياة اليومية من الحزن العابر أو المواقف المُشكلة يقوده لبحث يائس عن سعادة أبدية وإستقرار دائم، يقابل ذلك تشجيعُ وجشع شركات الأدوية التي توهمه بإمكانية الوصول لهذه المرحلة الوهمية.
إننا بحاجة لرؤية الخط الرفيع بين المرض النفسي والسواء، فالحزين ليس مكتئباً بالضرورة، والطفل (كثير الحركة) ليس من الحتمي أن يكون مضطرباً بفرط الحركة وتشتت الإنتباه.
هذا التجاوز والميل إلى المبالغة يؤدي إلى غياب الأساس لأي مجتمع (أساس السواء)، فلم تكن المجتمعات يوماً مجتمعات مريضة، ولم يُوصم غالبية أفرادها بمسميات نفسية، ويتلقون علاجات دوائية لا حاجة لهم بها.
