وقبل الدخول إلى عالمها؛ فإن من الضروري الحديث عن وضع المرأة العربية المسلمة في الأزمنة السابقة عليها والمعاصرة لها، وإبراز مكانتها ودورها الفاعل في مختلف المجالات العلمية والإجتماعية والسياسية.
وعُمدة الدراسة ومصدرها الأساس: كتب التراث العربي الإسلامي الحافلة بالمعلومات الغزيرة الثمينة التي تحتاج إلى تنقيب واسع لإستخراجها وعرضها للإنسان المعاصر؛ ليدرك ما كانت عليه المرأة من مكانة رفيعة لا تقل عن مكانة الرجل الذي حاز النصيب الأوفر من التتبع والدرس والإظهار.
كما ترصد عظم دورها من خلال رصد مشاركاتها في الحراك العلمي على وجه الخصوص، وستكون البداية في تتبع جملة من النساء المؤثرات اللاتي خدمن الحركة العلمية وشاركن في تشييد بنياتها، ثم الولوج إلى محور الدراسة: "شُهدة بنت أحمد بن الفرج الإبري"؛ بداية من تتبع إنتمائها المكاني وأسرتها الحاضنة، ومولدها ونشأتها، وإنخراطها في سلك التعلم، وظهورها كاتبةً ومحدثةً، ومسيرتها العلمية إلى حين وفاتها، وأثرها من خلال التتلمذ لها والرواية عنها على مدى قرون، وإنتشار سمعتها شرقاً وغرباً.
