بالنظر إلى تطور المعارف في الأنثروبولوجيا الطبية وفي الطب، يمكننا أن نحكم بأن هذا الكتاب تقادم نوعًا ما. «صحيح أن التطبيقات تتغير لكن المبادئ تبقى ثابتة». فأمام سرعة تطورات المعارف والتكنولوجيات، صرنا بحاجة أكثر فأكثر إلى تفكير إتيقي، بل حتى إلى مبادئ إتيقية. وعلى اعتبار أن «المبادئ» ليست قواعد مفروضة، وقرارات استبدادية، إنما بالأحرى علامات تفكير متأتية العمل النقدي لأسلافنا ومعاصرينا في الإنسانية.
يرى المؤلف أن التفكير الأخلاقي للفيلسوف والطبيب الإغريقي في القرن الرابع قبل الميلاد، أبقراط Hippocrate، لا يزال مصدر إلهام للبشرية اليوم أيضًا بعدما ألهم مفكرين لعدة قرون: إن قسمه يشكِّل مرجعًا تقريبًا لجميع القواعد المعاصرة للديونطولوجيا الطبية. فقد ترك أثره، في صلاة الطبيب، على اللاهوتي والفيلسوف، ابن ميمون Maïmonide، المولود بإسبانيا في القرن الثاني عشر ميلادي، وهي الحقبة التي كانت فيها الثقافات اليهودية، الإسلامية والمسيحية تثري بعضها وتتلاقح بتبادلات متنوعة. ففي العمق، الإنسانية، بحسب تعبير عالم الأحياء الشهير ألبير جاكار Albert Jacquart، تُبنى بتؤدة وصبر بفضل جهد كل واحد منا نحن: جهد تفكير وممارسة مسؤولة ومتماسكة.
