فعلى مدى عقدين من الزمن امتطى المؤلف عبد الله ولد محمدي راحلته، وسافر إلى مدن عدة في أطراف الصحراء الإفريقية.
من تومبكتو جوهرة الصحراء الغامضة؛ حيث سلاطين الذهب وكنوز الخطوطات و«البوابة اللغز»، وخطوات البحث عن قبيلة ضائعة، إلى أروان التي تروي فاجعة حلت بها ورمتها بعيدًا عن طريق القوافل، ثم إلى كانو معقل مسلمي نيجيريا ومدينة الأولياء والجنرالات، فشنقيط مخزن المخطوطات النادرة ومصدر علماء الصحراء إلى الحجاز، وأغمات التي تعيش ذكرى الأمير الأندلسي الأسير المعتمد بن عباد.
مدن يصعب اليوم العودة إلى بعضها بسبب ما أصابها من تعقيدات الحروب، وأخرى تعيش في دائرة النسيان، وتواجه نوائب الدَّهر متسلحة بتاريخ طويل.
