تتمتّع الليبراليّة بجاذبيّة وب«سحر خاص» بالنظر الى ارتباطها وتماهيها أحيانًا مع الحريّة ولكن جاذبيّة الأفكار أو سحر النظريّات لا يحولان دون ممارسة الفكر لوظيفته الأساسيّة أي النقد. إن المفهوم الأساسي في الحداثة الفكريّة والسياسيّة هو مفهوم الحريّة. لقد اقترنت حريّة الوعي والتفكير لدى مفكّري العصور الحديثة، منذ فرنسيس بيكون (F.Bacon) وجون لوك(J.Locke) حتى ماركس (Marx) وبنجامين كونستون(B. Constant) ، بالحريّة السياسيّة، لهذا يجوز اعتبار الليبراليّة العنوان الأوّل للحداثة سواء في بعدها الفكري أو في بعدها السياسي. إن الحداثة ليبراليّة سواء من جهة النظريّة أو من جهة الممارسة: تحرير الإنسان من الحاجة إزاء الطبيعة (وذلك من خلال معرفة الطبيعة والسيطرة عليها وامتلاكها) وتحريره من الخرافة والجهل (من خلال اعتبار العقل مصدر المعرفة والعقلانيّة الرؤية الوحيدة المقبولة للعالم بحكم مصدرها ذاك) وكذلك تحريره من الإستبداد عبر تأسيس الدولة المدنيّة وتحديد شروط الإجتماع السياسي وأهدافه من منظور عقلاني نفعي. الحريّة هي إذن جوهر الحداثة الفكريّة والسياسيّة وبالنظر الى هذه المكانة التي للحرية في مستوى النظرية وفي مستوى الممارسة يمكن القول دون مبالغة إن الحداثة ليبراليّة.
