نُشرت هذه الدراسة عن الدكتور عبدالله النفيسي، أول ما نُشرت، في مجلة المجلة، ثم نُشرت في كتاب "شيء من النقد شيء من التاريخ: آراء في الحداثة والصحوة وفي الليبرالية واليسار" الصادر عن دار جداول، والذي لقي إقبالًا حسنًا على شرائه لدى جموعٍ من القرّاء، رغم صخامة حجمه.
وبعد صدور الكتاب اقترحَ عددٌ من المثقفين أن تُفرَد هذه الدراسة في كتاب مستقل، نظرًا إلى أهميتها، رغم أنها - كما يقول كاتبها- قد لقيت غضب واستياء كثرة كاثرة ممَّن ينتمون إلى تيارات مختلفة، متناكفة ومتناحرة، سواء أكانت هذه التيارات دينية أم علمانية، حكومية أم معارضة، وكان لافتًا إحجام الغاضبين والمستائين عن الردِّ عليها.
