غالباً ما يقع الانطباع بين العلماء والمسلمين أنفسهم عن النساء في التاريخ الإسلامي ضمن وجهتي نظر متباينتين، تعتبر أولاهما أنّ النساء كنّ مضطهدات في المجتمع الإسلامي، بينما تعتبر الثانية أن الإسلام منح المرأة مكانة لا نظير لها في الديانات والثقافات الأخرى.
من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب الذي يتضمن دراسة طويلة عن تراجم النساء من أجل رصد الانطباع الذهني عن النساء في المجتمع الإسلامي، على مدار القرون السبعة الهجريّة الأولى، وذلك من خلال رؤى كُتاب مسلمين، كما سعت إلى التغلب على المآزق الخفية لدراسة تاريخية عريضة، وذلك عن طريق التركيز على وحدة مستقلة من التحليل (المدخل لسيرة المرأة) في ضرب أدبي فريد (المعجم الخاص بالسِّير الشخصية للمرأة) الذي شاع في الثقافة الإسلامية من عصر تكوينها وإلى الوقت الحاضر.
كما يناقش أصول وتطور وغاية مجموعة التراجم والسِّير النسائية الإسلامية، وهي لم تغفل القضايا ذات الصلة، التي تنطوي على ما هو أكثر من مجرد أهمية التأريخ، وهي قضايا ذات صلة بفهم دور النساء، كما وصفته كتابات السِّير والتراجم التي تصدت لتراجم النساء.
