حين يوضع الإنسان بين الإرادة والقدر، يكون عليه الإختيار، فإما أن يرضخ للقدر وقد يفقد في هذه الحالة حريته وحقه في الإختيار، وإما أن ينحاز لحريته ويكون عليه في هذه الحالة أن يدفع ضريبة هذا الإنحياز، وهكذا كان أدباء العراق ومثقفيهم وخصوصاً جيل الغربة منهم كفاروق يوسف وسعدي يوسف وجبرا إبراهيم جبرا وغيرهم كثير. لقد اختار "فاروق يوسف" الناقد والشاعر العراقي المعروف أن يروي لسان حالهم في "فردوس نائم" ليجسّد من خلالهم حكايات الغربة والحنين. هؤلاء الذين واجهوا العالم بالقلم فأصبح كلّ منهم يبحث عن وطن فلا يجده فآمنوا بالعلم والمعرفة وأخذوا على أنفسهم عهداً بالتغيير مهما كان هذا التغيير قاسياً.
"فردوس نائم" كتاب في أدب السيرة يحكي قصة وطن معذب وطن أُجبر أحراره على الرحيل عنه، ولكن نبضه بقي في قلوبهم وفي قلب شاعرنا رغم ما مر به من نكسات يقول عن بغداد "المدينة التي تحب لم تعد أجزاء كثيرة منها موجودة ... لم نعد نعرفها وهي المدينة التي ولدنا فيها وقضينا بين جدران متاهاتها الجزء الأكبر من حياتنا، بل وأودعنا أشباحنا في خزانتها. صحراء نشأت بيننا وليست حقولاً. حزينة كانت تنظر إلينا بعيني رهينة. لقد ابتكر العالم كله نوعاً جديداً من العذاب كانت بغداد هي مختبر تجربته ...".
يضم الكتاب ثمانية عشر عنواناً يحكي فيه شاعرنا قصة كل عراقي، وكل نهر، وكل حجر، وكل ذرة تراب اجتاحتها أنامل الغدر ومزقتها ولكنها لم تستطع أن تغير شيئاً في نفوس أبنائها.
وعليه يكون كتاب "فردوس نائم" زمناً للقراءة والحياة في النص الجميل.
