نقرأ فيها: «هم يريدون أن يعيشوا الحياة التي اعتادوها، لا يريدون مقبرة للأحياء، كما يقول قاسم صدقة، تذوب فيها معاني الفرحة والبهجة… فطقوس السعادة التي اعتادوها في قراهم هي الوحيدة التي تخرجهم من معاناتهم اليومية، يهربون بها من جحيم المعاناة والفقر المستمر إلى واقع من الفرح الذي يتكاتفون في صناعته بالفطرة التي فطر الله الناس عليها، وليس بالتنطع في الدين واغتيال الفرح حتى لدى الصغار… يقولون إن بئر السيد، التي كانت مزاراً للقاءات والابتسامات وسبباً في الزواج وطقوس الحياة الجميلة، أصبحت اليوم رمزاً للقسوة، ولم يعد يقصدها إلا الرعاة وعابرو السبيل… ذات يوم سقطت فيها جارية من جواري الشيخ جبران فلم ينقذها أحد، إذ اختلف الجميع على من يكون محرماً لها ليستطيع النزول لإنقاذها، وتوسعت دائرة الخلاف حتى فارقت الجارية الحياة. ظلت وقتاً في البئر بعد موتها ليتطوع أحد الرعاة لإخراجها بعد أن أفتى له الغريب بذلك».
