يشكل هذا الكتاب قراءة في مفهومي الإخلاص والحركة في فكر وفلسفة "محمد إقبال" بوصفه مجدداً في التيار التحديثي الإسلامي".
يبدأ الكتاب بمقدمة للفيلسوف الكندي تشارلز تايلور يرى فيها أن فكر محمد إقبال يجب أن يعود، وتعاد قراءته بإستمرار، لأنه "حداثة تنطلق من منفرج مثير، من الرجوع إلى الوصول، للبحث فيها عن سبل الإخلاص الحقيقي في وضع تاريخي غير مسبوق" ويراها فلسفة للإنسانية لا تختص بدين أو مذهب.
وفي ثنايا الكتاب يقدم المؤلف "سليمان بشير ديان" قراءة حديثة لفلسفة محمد إقبال، تتقاطع مع الراهن من الأفكار الفلسفية، ايخوض "ديان" في أربعة فصول الكثير مما يتعلق برؤية إقبال الفلسفية للفرد والفعل الإنساني، وفي إطار رؤية تنبع من الفلسفة الإسلامية الإصلاحية في جنوحها الحداثي، والتي إزدهرت قبل قرنين من الزمن.
وفي الفصل الأول تحدث المؤلف عن إقبال وعائلته ونشأته وتعليمه، وأهميته كفيلسوف وشاعر أثر في ملايين البشر في باكستان وحول العالم.
وفي الفصل الثاني تحدث المؤلف عن (فلسفة الفرد) عند إقبال من خلال ثلاثة محاور هي: تأكيد الذات، محنة الثبات، وكوسمولوجيا الظهور.
أما الفصل الثالث فتحدث فيه المؤلف عن (فلسفة الفعل) عند إقبال، ومنها فلسفته في الحياة، وفلسفته في التسامح وأشياء أخرى.
ويأتي الفصل الرابع والأخير ليشير إلى دور إقبال العلمي، فهو من رواد المدرسة التحديثية، التي أرادت التوفيق بين الدين والعلم، لذا أكد إقبال على أن النزعة التجريبية والطبيعية من صميم الرؤية القرآنية. دون أن يقع في فخ العلموية.
وأخيراً يمكن القول: أن محمد إقبال كان فيلسوف للتعددية وتفهم اختلاف البشر، ورفض إعتبارهم جواهر ثابتة أو قطيعاً يقادون، بل ذوات متمايزة وفاعلة باستمرار...
