عايش المؤلف طفرات حركاتٍ ثلاث في السعودية، هي: حركة الحداثة، حركة الصحوة، والحركة الليبرالية الحالية. وفي كتابه هذا يُقدّم شذرات من تاريخ حركتي الحداثة والصحوة وإشارات عن ماضي الليبرالية، الواهن والضعيف، المُلبس والغامض إلى العقد ما قبل الأخير من القرن الماضي.
وفي خضم هذا السعي يُقدّم المؤلف لمحات من تاريخ السعودية الثقافي والأيديولوجي، وومضات من تاريخ الصحوة والحداثة والليبرالية، واليسار في بُعده العربي.
هذا هو موضوع الكتاب الرئيس الذي ضمّ أيضًا، مواضيع مختلفة، تقرب من الموضوع الرئيس وتُبعد عنه قليلاً. وقد تناول صاحب الكتاب موضوعاته في مواطن كثيرة بشيء من الصرامة القاسية، وفي مواطن قليلة بشيء من الرفق واللين، معالجًا إياها بأساليب تتراوح ما بين البحث والتدقيق والنبش والسجال والمطارحة والتهكّم والسخرية.
مما يشدّ الانتباه أن المؤلف راجع أكثر من فكرة كان يؤمن بها. وبما أن المؤلف معنيٌّ بالتحولات في دراسة خصّصها لهذه القضية وفي أكثر من مقالة، يُطرح تساؤل هنا: هل تراجعه ومراجعته ينُمّان عن تحوّل أم تتطوُّر في أفكاره؟!
