ما من أحد يشكك في أن زمن الأسلاف عاش منجزات لا تمحى وشهد رجالات لا تنسى، ولكن كتب التراث غالت وبالغت في أسطرة الأسلاف وفي مدهم بقدرات خوارقية تتجاوز طبائعهم البشرية، وبشكل لا يستسيغه عقل ولا يرتضيه علم. وللأمانة، فإن النظرة الاحتفائية للسلف ليست حكراً على المسلمين دون سواهم من البشر. فإن من يقرأ في صفحات التراث الروحي للإنسان سوف يجد أن البشرية، ومنذ طفولتها، وحين كانت تتلمس طريقها بين الظلمات، قد عرفت تقديس الموتى أو عبادة الأسلاف. وكما يحن الإنسان منا إلى ماضيه القريب ويتحسر على زواله ويتمنى لو عاد به الزمن، فإنه كذلك يضفي على حياة أسلافه البعيدين ما يضفيه على حياته الماضية من كمال. والناس، متى أدلهمت الخطوب وتأزمت الأوضاع واختلطت السبل، وجدوا في حياة من مرّوا وغبروا ملجأ وملاذاً تتعزى بها نفوسهم وتتسلى عن واقعهم البائس.
لقد انتخبنا من التاريخ أموراً وأشياء، نحسب أن بعضها قد ضُخم.. وبعضها قد طُمس.. وبعضها الآخر قد حُرِّف، إما بقصد الوصول إلى غاية معينة وإما بسبب عجز عن إيجاد مبرر أخلاقي لها، وذلك حتى نضعها ضمن إطارها الواقعي. وعموماً، ما كتبناه في هذا الكتاب لا يغدو أن يكون محاولة متواضعة منا لمحو بعض ما يكتنف التاريخ من ضباب الأساطير.
