يرصد هذا الكتاب سيولة عبارة الجزاء في نصوص "جماعة التأويل"، مفسرين وأصوليين، وسبلَ استغلالها وتحويلِ طاقتها الرمزية الهائلة لتكون قوة جذب للمتلقي. فبعد أن شهدت تشكلها على مسطح الخطاب العربي، وقد صار تحت هيمنة النص القرآني في منعطف القرن السابع الميلادي، وقطعت مع التصور الوثني لتنفتح على القطاع التوحيدي، لاسيما المسيحي، شرع التأويل يدبّر سماتِها ويحوّرها وفق مصلحة قوى سياسية – اقتصادية تناحرت من أجل السلطة، واتخذت الدين لَبوساً، فلم تجد أفضلَ من عبارة الجزاء الأخروي سلاحاً يعِدُ الاستحواذُ عليه بالتعبئة من جهة وكسر العدوّ من جهة أخرى. هكذا اخترقت العبارة الأثيرة كلَّ نصوص الفِرَق قديماً والتيارات الدينية حديثاً، فكانت المحدد الأساسيَّ لوجه المسلم وهو مغمور
