يشكل هذا العمل قراءة في مجموعة "حياة سابقة" للكاتب العراقي علي القاسمي اختارها الدكتور "فيصل غازي النعيمي" موضوعاً للدراسة للكشف عن حساسية النص القصصي عند القاسمي المتأسس على تجربة ثقافيةٍ عريقةٍ ورصينةٍ ومغامرةٍ حياتيةٍ شمولية. يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب "أن تجربة القاسمي ما هي إلا امتداداً لتجربة القصة القصيرة في العراق. لذلك فإن هذه التجربة تمثل امتداداً، وفي الوقت نفسه، تجربةً مغايرةً تتأسَّس على تجربةٍ حياتيةٍ ثريةٍ وممتدةٍ وعميقةٍ مكَّنت القاسمي من أن يشكل مغامرةً جماليةً ذات خصوصيةٍ سرديةٍ تتكئ على النزعة الإنسانية وتقارب حركية التجريب القصصي العراقي المعاصر، في حدودِ شخصيةٍ لم تشأ الذوبان والتماهي في تجارب الغير". ولأجل الكشف عن ثراء هذه التجربة وعمقها وزع النعيمي دراسته على فصول ثلاثة: جاء الفصل الأول بعنوان (تقنيات اللعبة السردية)، وفيه إفادات الدراسة من المقولات السردية الحديثة، حاول الكاتب تطبيقها من دون تعسُّف على نصوص القاسمي في مجموعة "حياة سابقة". بحيث أخذ الفصل شكل التقسيم الثلاثي الذي انشغل بقضايا: هيمنة البنية الاستذكارية، والإيقاع السردي، والرؤية السردية. وتناول الفصل الثاني (تجليات المكان: المرجع والمتخيَّل) من خلال محاور ثلاثة أوَّلها: (التشكيل المكاني ومبدأ التقاطبات الضدية)، ومن خلاله شكَّل علي القاسمي أمكنته وفق رؤية فكريةٍ/فنيةٍ/تراثيةٍ تنتظم فيها الأمكنة على مبدأ الثنائيات الضدية، وهذا ما أكسبها عمقاً وثراءً وحيويةً وحركيةً شملت النصوص بأكملها. وثانيها: (المكان.. الهوية) حيث يطرح الفضاء القصصي عند القاسمي أسئلة مهمة تتعلق بالهوية والانتماء، والغربة والاغتراب. وثالثها: (المكان بين التشييد والرؤية) حيث لا تتحدَّد قيمة الفضاء المكاني من العلاقات والإشارات الجغرافية والطوبوغرافية فحسب، بل كذلك من الرؤية الإدراكية الإنسانية التي تشيد المكان وتفعِّل من حضوره في وجدان الشخصيات. وتناول الفصل الثالث والأخير (فاعلية الحب والمتخيل السردي) وهي قضية إشكالية وأساسيةً في إبداع القاسمي أشغلته وأخذت الحيز الكبير من اهتمامه، وتوزّعت ما بين فاعلية الإيروس، وثقافة الجسد، والانحياز للحبّ، والحبّ المرضي المتأسِّس على الوسواس القهري والأوهام، ومن ثمَّ الحبّ المثالي الإنساني البعيد عن الرغبات الجسدية.
