في هذا الكتاب يتحدث الدكتور رشيد الحاج صالح عن «الوجه الآخر للعِلم» وعلاقته بالإنسان في المجتمعات الحديثة فالمؤلف يعتبر أن الإنسان المعاصر اليوم "كائن علمي"، بمعنى أنه يعيش ويفكر ويتديَّن من خلال العلم ومنجزاته. فالعلم برأيه أخذ يحتل ليس حياة الإنسان العملية وحسب، بل أصبح يمسك بروحه وعقله وأيديولوجياته؛ ولذلك لم يعد بإمكان العلم إلا أن ينخرط في تلك المجالات، وأن يتحول إلى أكبر أداة "للسيطرة" في العصر الحديث.
وبناءً عليه، يتناول هذا الكتاب "العلم" بوصفه ظاهرة ثقافية وإنسانية، وموضوع صراع سياسي وديني بين مختلف الفعاليات العامة في المجتمعات؛ فالعلم اليوم لم يعد مجرد اختراعات وتكنولوجيا تساعد الإنسان في السيطرة على الطبيعة، بل اتضح أنه يساعد في سيطرة الإنسان على الإنسان نفسه، وأنه أخذ ينخرط بوتيرة متسارعة في مشاكل السياسة، ويدخل في حياة البشر بطريقة غير مسبوقة؛ لدرجة أنه أخذ يعيد أشكال التديَّن على نحو مختلف، الأمر الذي أدى إلى توسع أشكال توظيفه في المجتمعات الحديثة، وإعادة تأويله - والكلام للمؤلف - من قبل المؤسسات الدينية والسياسية والاقتصادية، كلٌّ بحسب موقعه في المجتمع. دون أن يعني ذلك أنه ليس للعلم بحد ذاته مشكلات كبرى أخذت تثقل على كاهل المجتمعات الحديثة.
هذه القضايا وما ينبثق عنها من مشكلات وتحديات وتحولات في بنية المجتمعات المعاصرة سواء في الشرق أم الغرب تم للمؤلف معالجتها مع طرح تصور جديد للعلاقة بين العلم والقيم الإنسانية في أربعة عناوين (فصول) رئيسية هي: الفصل الأول: المعرفة العلمية بين العوامل الاجتماعية والبنية المنطقية. الفصل الثاني: العلم والاستبداد. الفصل الثالث: العلم والمؤسسة الدينية. الفصل الرابع: القيم الإنسانية بوصفها براديم للعلم المعاصر.
