في مجموعته القصصية هذه، يلتقط "فريد هدى" من الجزائر مشاهد اجتماعية، تعتمد أسلوب التلغيز الذي يعرّي الواقع السياسي، والديني، والفكري لبلاده. وفي "عليها تسعة عشر" استطاع الراوي التعبير بدقة متناهية وبأقل عدد من الكلمات عن حركية المجتمع من خلال شخصيات تتوارى خلفها حمولة فكرية تعبر عن وعي جمعي جماعي، تكون فيه الرؤية إلى العالم شمولية لا تختص بمكان محدد وزمن محدد؛ وفيها تتداخل أصوات متنوعة محدثة صراعاً جدلياً بين الشخصيات المؤثثة لفضاء القص الروائي. وفي هذه القصص يشعر القارئ بمدى تأثر القاص بالمشهد السياسي ليس في بلده فحسب، بل في غالبية البلدان العربية التي تحكمها أنظمة لا تحترم إنسانية الإنسان، ومنها تجربة السجن في القصة التي افتتح بها مجموعته والتي جاءت بعنوان "كابوس" وفيها يضعنا فريد هدى أمام مشهد هزلي على ما آل إليه الإنسان، وما وصلت إليه الإنسانية عامة، حيث أصبحت المطالبة بالحقوق وبالحريات جريمة يعاقب عليها القانون "... لساني خذلني – مواطن أنا... أطالب بحقوقي المدنية... للبلاد قوانين! - سُمع أخيراً لي: - يريد حقوقه... المحترم! - حسناً... أعطوه إياها (...) فجأة استفقت مذعوراً على هزّ عنيف بالباب، فانفلقت على رجالٍ أحاطوا بي، فطرحوني والكرسي أرضاً وكبلوا يدي وقدمي، فبادرني أحدهم برفسةٍ من حذائه (...) أمسك أحدهم بفكي وجمع شعري، وبحزمة الأوراق تلك، حشا آخر جوف فمي... ونحرني...". "وعليها تسعة عشر" قصص تتأرجح بين الواقع والمثال، بين الحقيقة والرمز، بين الإنساني والإلهي، الأمر الذي تجلى في وحدة نصية – سردية متناغمة تعيد النظر بكثير من المسلمات التي حكمت الواقع...
