في «انتظار الماضي» المجموعة القصصية الجديدة للقاص الموريتاني أحمد ولد إسَلْمُ، تحضر الأنثى بطلة الحلم الغائب، عبر خطين: خط الانتظار، وخط العذاب، يتحرك الخطان من خلال تحرك السرد بين الداخل والخارج، يتحرك في الأول عبر أحلام البطل وتخيلاته، ويرصد في الثاني العالم الواقعي الذي تدور حوله الحكاية، ففي القصة المعنونة "انتظار مع كأس عصير" يستثمر المؤلف عناصر الانتظار، ليصور ألوان الغياب، وأبعاده النفسية، وذلك عن طريق تكنيك رومانسي يتجه إلى عالم الشخصية الداخلي، وما يدور في خلدها، ولا يحفل العالم الخارجي إلا بمقدار ما يحفز الشخصية إلى الاتداد لذاتها وذكرياتها وزمنها الحالي. لنقرأ هذا المقطع من القصة الآنفة الذكر:"وحيداً مع كأس العصير جلست، نظرت الأفق السحيق، أبحث عن إشارة تدلني على مسار سالك إليك، عن لغة تكون أكثر قدرة على استيعاب ما أريد قوله، أعدت النظر كرتين، أتأمل أغوار التاريخ الحديث، أحاول سبر تفاصيله، تتداخل الأجزاء، تتشابه المكونات، أنظر كأس العصير، أرتشف قليلاً... ثم أتنهد..تتساقط أوراق شجرة الصفصاف التي أجلس تحت ظلها الوارف، كأوراق ذكريات قديمة لعاشق بائس،... ليس في أرضك صفصاف، لم نلتق يوماً تحت صفصافة، لكن كان ظل الشجر يوحي إليّ بشيء عنك، شيء يتعلق بك، هناك علاقة ما بينك وبين ظل الشجر، إنه يغادر بسرعة مثلك، وكثيراً ما لا يسمّع به إلا النائي أكثر...أحاول تناول القلم، أدير ظهري للإحباط، أستنشق القليل من الأمل، أنظر إلى عقارب ساعتي وهي تركض إلى المجهول، تجر وراءها عنوة عمري، فينقاد لها استسلاما... ارتشف القليل من العصير، وأنتظر...".إن أحمد ولد إسَلْمُ، في عمله القصصي هذا، يضيف مثالاً آخر لقصة قصيرة جديدة يعادل اليقين بالنسبة لها الوهم بعينه.- تضم المجموعة خمسة عشر قصة قصيرة جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "ابتسامة حامدينو"، "رقم مخفي"، "المشموم"، "هل أشرح لك؟"، "النداء الأخير"، "الكرسي المحجوز"، "ورقة عائمة"، "انتظار مع كأس عصير"، "لو جئت أمس"، "وحصلت عليك أخيراً"، "درب"، "صفر اليدين"، "لفتة مصير"، "ولماذا يضحك..؟!"، "المنتظر"، و"خاتمة".
