إن المناقشة الحجاجية، بحسب آبل، ليست لعبة قوامها اللغة يكون الانخراط فيها من عدمه سيان، بل إنها تعد عماد النشاط التواصلي بما هو ماهية أساسية ذاتية وبينذواتية في الوقت ذاته، وهو ما ينطبق حصراً على أنواع النشاط التي كان قد حددها هابرماز كالنشاط المتعلق باستجلاء المعنى، أو ذلك الخاص بالبحث عن الحقيقة، أو عن الانضباط، أو عن الصدق. هذه المتطلبات الأساسية للنشاط لا بد أن تكون ترانسندنتالية كما يرى آبل وإلا ستختزل إلى مجرد شروط سوسيو-ثقافية ذات وجود نسبوي لا يمكن الاطمئنان إليها بقصد بعث تأسيس فلسفي نهائي.
إن إيتيقا المناقشة كما تصورها آبل لا تهدف إلى تأسيس معايير مؤسسية بطريقة قبلية، وإنما تهدف، عكس ذلك، إلى تأسيس شكل إجرائي يسهل إنسيابية النقاش والحوار بغرض الوصول إلى نتائج محددة تلخص في قرارات مع ملاحظة في غاية الأهمية، وهي أن هذا النقاش نقاش حقيقي، واقعي يدور حول مصالح حقيقية تمس حياة البشر كما هي متجلية في واقعهم الاجتماعي التاريخي، وهنا مكمن الخلاف بين نزعة هابرماز الشمولية والنزعة الترانسندنتالية عند آبل.
