يبني الكاتب عبد الرحمن أسامة سفر كتابه «لصوص النار: قصة العبقرية» فرضية بسيطة مفادها: بدون الفضول، لا توجد عبقرية. بدون الفضول، تلك النار المقدسة التي تضيء ممرات وأقبية المعرفة، سيظل المرء يتخبط في بحر من الظلمات، ولا يهم حينها ذكاء المرء أو نبوغه، أما الإبداع أو الجهد فيصيران لوناً من ألوان العبودية، يوظفها المرء لينير درب غيره، ولن يعرف المرء اهتماماً أو شغفاً أصيلاً. مهمة جزء كبير من الكتاب هي إظهار الترابط الوثيق بين الفضول والعبقرية. بل إنهما يتشاركان تاريخاً؛ فمنذ أيام الفيلسوف اليوناني الأهم سقراط حتى أواخر عصر النهضة، نجد أن العبقرية حيثما وجدت كانت إلهاماً. ونجد أن الفضول كان فعلاً بغيضاً مكروهاً؛ فسقراط، مثل السواد الأعظم آنذاك، آمن بالميتافيزيقيات، بل إن له كذلك قريناً يلهمه أمور الحكمة والمعرفة. وكأن السابقين حاولوا تحذيرنا: فضولك يقودك إلى حتفك، فها هي أجنحة إيكاروس تذوب ويسقط حين أراد أن يعانق السماء ويعرف الشمس واقترب منها رغم صرخات أبيه ولوعته.
إن رسالة السابقين واضحة: العلوم والمعرفة والإلهام تُمنح للبشر ولا تُكتسب. يناقش الكتاب قواعد صيرورة العباقرة التي تعتمد على يانصيب الحياة، وهي عوامل مثل الجينات المتفوقة والبيئة المتميزة والفرص النادرة، ويرصد سلوك العباقرة ويصنفهم: العبقري العفوي والعبقري الحساس، ويدرس الفروق والاختلافات بين عباقرة الشرق والغرب، بين العباقرة القدماء والمعاصرين، وبين العباقرة في حقول الفن، وحقول العلم، من دون أن يغفل أوجه التشابه بينهم. وبمعنى آخر الكتاب هو "محاولة لإزالة الغشاء المحيّر والذي جعلنا نتيه لفترة طويلة".
