يقص علينا كتاب (الملعقة المختفية) بأسلوب سلس وعبارات رشيقة، خواص العناصر الكيميائية للجدول الدوريِّ، وتاريخها، وكيف تم اكتشافها، وتأثيرها الكبير في حياتنا، فما بين عنصر الهيدروجين في أعلى اليسار، والعناصر الكامنة في الصفِّ الأسفل من الجدول، سوف تجد شخصيات لامعة ومغمورة، وقصصاً عن عمق الفيزياء، ودقة الأحياء، والتاريخ، والأدب، والمال، والجريمة، والجنون، والحب، وعلم الصرف، والفنون، وعلم النفس.
إن هذه القصص قدمت لنا وسيلة لمعرفة العناصر الكيميائية عن قُرب، تفتقر إليها الكتب المدرسية أو أدلة المعامل. وهذا الكتاب هو أكثر بكثير من مجرد دليل مكتوب ببراعة عن الجدول الدوريِّ، لقد قدم أفكاراً رائعة وحديثة عن العناصر؛ من المجرّات المتباعدة في علم الكون، إلى الجسيمات دون الذرية في ميكانيكا الكم.
يبقى أن نشير أن المؤلف: سام كين، متخصص في الفيزياء، يعمل كاتباً في المجال العلمي، حصل عام 2009 على المركز الثاني في مسابقة الجمعية الوطنية للكتاب العلميين، كأفضل كاتب دون سن الثلاثين. كما وصل كتابه "الملعقة المختفية" إلى القائمة القصيرة في مسابقة الكتب العلمية من الجمعية الملكية البريطانية عام 2011.
