يقف المؤلف عبر صفحات الكتاب على تجربته الطفولية مع الأسماك في المرحلة الإبتدائية مروراً بدراسته الجامعية في علم الأحياء وانتهاءً بكونه مختصاً في علم الأحياء ومديراً للجمعية الإنسانية في الولايات المتحدة، وهي أكثر منظمات حماية الحيوان نفوذاً في العالم. في المقدمة التي يفتتح بها المؤلف كتابه يقول: "… أُلِّف عددٌ هائل من الكتب حول الأسماك؛ تنوُّعها، وبيئتها، وخصوبتها، واستراتيجيات بقائها. ويمكن ملء عدّة رفوف بكتب ومجلاّت حول كيفية صيد الأسماك. ومع ذلك، لم يُؤلَّف، حتى اليوم، كتابٌ لأجل الأسماك. أنا لا أشير هنا إلى رسالة الصِّيانيّين التي تشجب محنة الأنواع المهدّدة بالانقراض أو فرط الاستغلال لمخزون الأسماك. يهدف كتابي إلى التكلُّم باسم الأسماك بطريقة لم تكن ممكنة في الماضي. بفضل الاختراقات العلمية في علم السلوك الحيواني، وعلم الأحياء الاجتماعي، وعلم الأحياء العصبي، وعلم البيئة، بإمكاننا الآن أن نفهم بشكلٍ أفضل كيف يبدو العالم للأسماك، وكيف تدركه، وتشعر به، وتختبره. ويتابع المؤلف: لدى قيامي بالبحث اللازم لهذا الكتاب سعيتُ إلى ترصيع العلم بقصصٍ لتجارب الناس مع السَّمك، وسأورد بعضاً منها في فصول الكتاب. ليس للنوادر مصداقية كبيرة بين العلماء، ولكنها تُبصِّر بما يُمكن أن تكون الحيوانات قادرة عليه ولم يكتشفه العلم بعد، كما يمكنها أن تستحثَ انعكاساً أعمق على علاقة الإنسان بالحيوان. إن ما يستكشفهُ هذا الكتاب هو إمكانيةٌ بسيطة بنتيجة بالغة الأثر. الإمكانية البسيطة هي أنّ الأسماك أفرادٌ بحياةٍ ذات قيمة جوهرية؛ ما يعني أنّ لديها قيمة لنفسها بغضّ النظر عن قيمتها النفعية لنا، كمصدرٍ للربح مثلاً، أو للتسلية. والنتيجة البالغة الأثر هي أنّ هذه الإمكانية ستؤهلها لأن تكون محتواة ضمن دائرة الاهتمام المعنوي للإنسان.
