في هذا الكتاب يقدم الدكتور أحمد حسن أحمد دراسة حول ظاهرة كرة القدم بوصفها الظاهرة الأكثر بروزاً في الحياة الاجتماعية للمجتمعات الحديثة منذ نهاية القرن التاسع عشر مروراً بالقرن العشرين وإلى الوقت الحاضر، بل لا تزال تزداد زخماً مع الأيام واتسع انتشارها مع وسائط النقل الحديثة إلى جميع دول العالم ونالت بلا منازع صفة اللعبة الشعبية الأولى.
انطلاقاً من تلك الرؤية اعتبر المؤلف أن كرة القدم كظاهرة اجتماعية كانت ولا تزال تستحق من أقسام الدراسات الاجتماعية والنفسية والاقتصادية بل والسياسية، مزيداً من الاهتمام بحثاً ودراسة وتحليلاً للظاهرة للوقوف على إيجابياتها ومحاربة سلبياتها في كل العالم، إذ من الواضح أن الدراسات في مجالها مجتزئة أو مجزئة للموضوعات متفرقة فيها، سواء في فنون الكرة وتكتيكها أو صلة الإعلام في عمومه بها، ولكن كلها لم تنفعل أو تتفاعل كما يُلاحظ مع هذه الحيوية الدفّاقة.
لقد أراد المؤلف من هذه الدراسة أن تخلق حالة من التفاعل بها والانفعال معها، لا تكتبها مجرد معلومة والسلام، فهي تريد أن تجلس بين الجمهور وتنزل الملعب وتلامس أنفاس المدربين وتستكشف مشاعر اللاعبين والإداريين وشغف وحب المشجعين. تحاول أن تبحث في السباب وما وراء ذلك... ومن ثم محاولة التحليل ومناقشة هذه الظاهرة من كافة جوانبها وهو ما تهدف إليه هذه الدراسة تحديداً، وذلك بالولوج إلى الجوانب السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية؛ بمحاولة التحليل لكل هذه الجوانب ومدى ارتباطها بكرة القدم وارتباط الكرة بها وصولاً لخاتمة تجتهد الدراسة في تقديم توصيات فيها حول الظاهرة وكيف يمكن أن تؤطر كرة القدم ويستفاد ويُتعلم منها.
