كلمة "السرطان" اشتُّقت من الكلمة اليونانية "كاركينوس" التي تعني سرطان البحر. سُمّيَ سرطاناً لأن عروقاً تظهر فهي تشبه أرجل السرطان البحري. وأول من ألمح إلى مرض السرطان هو أبو الطب، أبقراط الذي عاش في القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد.. وحتى بداية القرن السابع عشر لم يكن هذا المرض منتشراً، ولم يُصَبْ به الناس إلا نادراً جداً. وفي بدايات القرن العشرين كانت أنواع كثيرة من السرطان لا تزال مجهولة ونادرة أيضاً. يعود انتشار السرطان بشكله المرعب اليوم إلى المدنيّة الحديثة والحضارة العصرية التي لوّثت البيئة وغيّرت في طبيعة الغذاء وأنماط العيش وأدّت إلى ظهور الزراعة الكيميائية-المكننة التي أدّت إلى ظهور علل في الخلايا، واضطرابات صحيّة وبيولوجية متنوعة وإلى أنواع مختلفة من السرطان. وفي هذا الكتيّب تحدثت عن سرطان البروستات لأنني أصبتُ به واكتشفته بنفسي عن طريق المطالعة، واستأصلته. و"قصتي مع سرطان البروستات" قصة مشوّقة يفيد منها "القارئ العابر والمريض المصاب" كما قال الدكتور بلبل، وبخاصة الذين يعانون مشاكل التبوّل وتضخّم البروستات، ومفيدة لمن يريد التزوّد بمعلومات عن السرطان وكيفية نشوئه وعلاجه واستئصاله، ونصائح للمرضى المصابين به.
