تقول الأسطورة أن مرض السرطان هو كائن خرافي غير مرئي له ثمانية أذرع ذات مخالب، وهي ذات الأذرع والمخالب لدى حيوان السرطان البحري، يصاب الإنسان بمرض السرطان عندما تمسك أحد هذه الأذرع ذات المخالب بأحذ أعضاء الجسن، ثم تمسك الذراع الأخرى -وفي مرحلة لاحقة- بأحذ الأعضاء الأخرى وهكذا حتى تمسك الثمانية أذرع جميعاً بالجسم.
لم تعد الأسطورة هي التفسير الوحيد لهذا المرض وسبب حدوثه وطرق انتشاره بل على العكس تمكن الطب -بفضل الله- من كشف الكثير من أسرار هذا المرض وحقق انتصارات كثيرة ومتعددة جداً في تشخيص وعلاج هذا المرض، والانتصار النهائي في المعركة ضد السرطان لن يكون بعيداً بإذن الله تعالى.
