منذ أول ولادة ناجحة من بويضة متبرّعة في العام 1984م في المركز الطبّي في جامعة كاليفورنيا (لوس أنجلس)، نمت تجارة البويضات أضعافاً مضاعفة، وهي تقدّم دراسة كلاسيكية في سوق العرض والطلب الحرّة. لقد تنامت ظاهرة التبرّع بالبويضات في الأصل كعلاج للشابّات اللواتي لديهنّ فشل مبكّر في المبيضين؛ ولكنها أصبحت مؤخراً أكثر استخداماً وعلى نطاق واسع كوسيلة للتغلّب على انخفاض الخصوبة بسبب تقدّم العمر. في الأيام الأولى، كان التبرّع بالبويضات كعمل خيري هو القاعدة، ولكن بما أنّ الطلب على البويضات ازداد بسبب التغيّر التكنولوجي والاجتماعي على حدّ سواء فإن تَحوّلاً في الدوافع نحو تقديم البويضات قد ظهر في الآونة الأخيرة.

لقد حاولت (آراثي براساد) في كتابها «الحمل في القرن الواحد والعشرين» استعراض مسيرة الإنسان مع الحمل والولادة، منذ فجر التاريخ البشري، وأوردت الخطوات الأولى التي خطاها الإنسان لفكِّ كُنْه سرِّ الخلق، ولم تُغفِل الدأب المتواصل نحو هذا الهدف حتى هذه الأيام. كما حاولت رصد أشباه ذلك في الحيوانات، علَّها تضيء شيئاً من المحاولات الحثيثة الجارية لحل المعضلات والمشاكل في حلم الإنسان بالذرِّية.

يكتسب الكتاب أهمية بالنظر إلى التساؤلات التي يثيرها علم الأحياء حول الدور الإنجابي للمرأة في المستقبل مثل: ما الذي سوف نواجهه إذا ما كان لنا أن نبدأ بإنجاب الأطفال بطريقة عذراء؟ أو هل سوف تحمل جيناتُ الطفل بعض الأمراض أو الأمزجة غير المرغوب بها؟ وهل سيشعر الطفلُ بصراع الانتماء، بيولوجياً، إلى أسرة أخرى، بدلاً من شعوره بالانتماء إلى من ولَدهُ أو ولدْتهُ؟ هل أطفال البويضات أو الحيوانات المنوية المتبرّع بها أشقّاء؛ وبأي معنى؟

أياً تكن الإجابة عن مثل تلك التساؤلات، وبغض النظر عن الضوابط الأخلاقية التي قد يقبلها البعض ويرفضها البعض الآخر، فإن العلم كان ولا يزال في خدمة الجنس البشري، وخاصة فيما يتعلق باستمرار وجود الإنسان على هذه الأرض، ولكن، تبقى المشكلة في طريقة فهمنا لخلق أو إنجاب الأطفال...
