تطوّر علم المناعة كثيراً خلال النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين، واكتشف رجاله كثيراً من المعلومات والقوانين التي تحكمه، كما اكتشفوا أدوية فعالة تستطيع السيطرة على التفاعلات المناعية في الأجسام الحيّة، وتمنع رفض الأعضاء المزروعة، فتمكَّنوا بذلك من تحقيق ثورة هامة في نجاح عمليات زرع الأعضاء وتعويض الأعضاء التي أتلفها المرض. كما استخدموها في علاج كثير من أمراض الحساسية والأمراض التي تنتج عن الخلل الذي قد يحدث في عمل جهاز المناعة فيهاجمُ جسمُ الإنسان نفسَه.
في هذا الكتاب يتحدث الدكتور عامر شيخوني في علم المناعة وزرع الأعضاء وقد وسمه بعنوان «قِصَّة المَناعة.. كيف كشفها رجالها؟» وهو الكتاب الثالث للمؤلف بعد «قصة القلب» و«قصة الوراثة». ويسرد فيه – كما يقول - قصة المناعة والرواد الذين كشفوا أسرارها، وفتحوا آفاقاً جديدة في الطب أملاً في علاج الأمراض وتخفيف آلامها، عسى أنْ يجد الشباب في قصصهم ما يحفز على الصبر وبذل الجهد أسوة بهؤلاء الرجال الذين تحمَّلوا كثيراً من النقد والفشل قبل أن يصلوا إلى المجد والخلود.
يتألف الكتاب من تسعة فصول تشرح العديد من الاكتشافات التي جاءت بها "ثورة علم المناعة" بالحقائق والصور والتجارب؛ كما تشتمل فصولها على التعريف بأبرز الرواد (العلماء) الذين كشفوا «قِصَّة المَناعة» وتجربتهم في هذا الحقل ومنهم: السير "بيتر برايان مدَوَّر" (1915 – 1987)، مؤسس علم المناعة الحديث، وواضع الأسس لعلم زراعة الأعضاء. حصل على جائزة نوبل سنة 1960. والباحث الأسترالي "فرانك ماكفارلان بورنت (1899 - 1985)، الذي حصل على جائزة نوبل سنة 1960 تقديراً لأبحاثه الرائدة في علم المناعة، والعالم الشهير أليكسيس كاريل (1873 - 1944)، الذي منح جائزة نوبل في الطب والفيزيولوجيا سنة 1912 تقديراً لأبحاثه في خياطة الشرايين والأوردة، ويعتبر بحق رائد جراحة الأوعية الدموية وزراعة الأعضاء، والعالِم الشهير لويس باستور (1822 - 1895)، الذي أثبت أن الجراثيم تسبب الأمراض المُعدية، والعالم الألماني روبرت كوخ (1843 - 1910) الذي اكتشف جرثومة مرض السل، وحصل على جائزة نوبل 1905... وآخرون.
