في هذا الكتاب يقدم الأستاذ "عبد الله بن سليم الرشيد" من السعودية دراسة مهمة في الشعر العربي الحديث، ينطلق فيها من زوايا مختلفة تغني مجال البحث العلمي في الظاهرة المدروسة. يعتبر الأستاذ عبد الله بن سليم الرشيد: أن الدراسات التي تناولت الشعر العربي الحديث لا تقطع الطريق على من يتأمل في شعرنا الحديث، ويعاود النظر فيه من زوايا مختلفة؛ فثمّ ظواهر فنية لم تقف بها أنظار الدارسين مطلقاً، أو أن بعضها حظي بكلمات وتعليقات في سياق دراسة الشعر بعامة، وهي تعليقات مفيدة جداً، ولكنها لا تغني نهمة الباحث؛ فبقيت تلك الظواهر خافية عن الكثيرين، غائبةً في خضمّ العناية بالظواهر الكبرى. وما بين دفتي الكتاب ثلاثة أبحاث علمية، تناولت ثلاث ظواهر جديرة بأن يُوقَف بها، نشرت سابقاً في مجلات علمية محكّمة. أول هذه الأبحاث يدرس (ظاهرة الصمت)، التي تجنح بالشعر إلى ألوان جديدة من التعبير الذي يُحمِّل اللغة طاقات تعبيرية، ويلوّنها بألوان من شعرية التدوين إن صحّ التعبير. والثاني يتناول (رثاء الشاعر للشاعر مضموناً وأداء)، وهذه الظاهرة واسعة جداً، وبالإمكان أن تُنجَز فيها عدة بحوث في الشعر القديم والحديث، وهو ما دعا الكاتب إلى استنطاقها مما قيل في رثاء خمسة شعراء فقط. وفي الثالث دراسة لـ (اللزوميات في الشعر العربي الحديث: الرؤية والتشكيل الفني)، وتتضمن الدراسة عرض لهذه الظاهرة التي تَمُتّ بسبب وثيق إلى الإحياء الشفهي الذي ظهر في بدايات العصر الحديث، واستمر حتى يومنا هذا. إن هذه الأبحاث الثلاثة محاولة من مؤلِّفها لاستنطاق خبايا الشعر، الذي ما يزال ثرّ المنابع، قادراً على استفزاز المتلقي، في عصر يُقال: إنه لم يعد عصراً للشعر.
