يعد "لويس بورخس" (1899 – 1986م) من أبرز كتّاب القرن العشرين بالإضافة إلى أنه كان شاعراً وناقداً وله عدة رسائل. وفي هذا الكتاب مختارات شعرية تضم (60) قصيدة للشاعر الأرجنتيني بورخس اختارها وترجمها الشاعر نصير فليح. ما يميز شعرية بورخس تلك المزاوجة بين الإشارات الميتافيزيقية والتلميحات الرمزية والاستبصارات النفسية التي تبحث عن المعنى عبر حركة الزمان والمكان معاً. ففي قصيدة بعنوان [الأشياء التي كان يمكن أن تكون] يقول الشاعر: "أفكر بالأشياء التي يُمكن أن تكون ولم تكنْ أبداً.....البحث في الأساطير الساكسونية الذي أغفل (بيده) كتابته… العمل الذي لا يمكن تصوره الذي ربما لمحهُ دانتي حالما صحح آخر أشعار الكوميديا…. التاريخ بدون غسقين: غسقُ الشوكران وغسق الصليب…..التاريخ بدون وجه هيلين…. الإنسان بدون العينين اللتين منحتانا القمر….أيام غيتسبرغ الثلاثة، انتصارُ الجنوب….الحب الذي لم نتقاسمه أبداً….. الإمبراطورية الواسعة التي مُنع الفايكنغ من تأسيسها…. الأرض بدون العجلة وبدون الوردة…..تقييمُ جون دون لشكسبير…..قرن اليونكورن الأبيض…..الطير الإيرلندي الخرافي الذي يحطُّ في مكانين في نفس الوقت….الطفل الذي لم يكن لي أبداً". ومن عناوين القصائد نذكر: "سعادة"، "ندم"، "المتواطئ"، "المرآة"، "شهرة"، "ندم على كل موت"، "المغالبة"، "أنا"، "آدم هورمادك"، "أشياء"، "المتاهة"، "البساطة"، "قصيدة"، "الانتحار"... إلخ.
