في اللافتة الشعرية الأولى التي تستهل بها منال شايع مجموعتها الشعرية «كاف الكبرياء» والتي تمظهرت كبنية إهداء تعلن الشاعرة عن حالة قائمة تسكن الذات وكل حرف من حروفها وهي كبرياء الأنثى في عشقها للآخر: "حتى كافُ الكبرياء.. مكسورة!! كانَ ذلكَ الحزن العتيق.. كفيلاً بأن يجعلَ خبرتي واسعة.. في ما يخصُّ الرحيل وما بعدَ الرحيل!" هكذا، تُفصح العبارات وبما فيها من علائق لغوية تكشف عنها القصائد تباعاً عن طبقة ثخينة من الألم تتبلس الذات/ الشاعرة عبر علاقة الذات والآخر، وخاصة عند الرحيل وما بعد الرحيل، والذي لم يتبقى منه سوى الذكرى. تحت عنوان «ثمانية وعشرون» تقول الشاعرة: "ها أنا/ أضيعُ بتقلبات الذات/ وأنتهي.. وفي كل مرة.. أبدأُ من جديد/ ليسَ هناك ثمة شيء/ يستحق الفوضى العارمة التي تحدث كل دقيقة في خلاياي العصبية!/ أتساءل أين سأجدني؟/ ما دمتُ مبعثرةً وأخشى الأعين؟ أين سألتقي بي؟ وكل يوم لي وجهة/ أحمدُ من سخّر لي ثمانية وعشرين حرفاً/ أتقلبُ فيها كيفَ أشاء...". تضم المجموعة إحدى وثلاثون قصيدة في الشعر العربي الحديث جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "أخبرني أحدهم"، "فقط.. كُنتُ أتألم"، "الاختباء"، "جاهل"، "وأعود"، "نافذتي"، "ونكتب"، "آمنت"، "ارحلْ"، "مفهوم جديد"، "ما زال يتساءل"، (...) وعناوين أخرى.
