أمضى كريس هادفيلد عقوداً من التدريبات كرائد فضاء وسجّل حوالى 4 آلاف ساعة في الفضاء. وتمكّن من دخول محطة فضائية بواسطة سكين الجيش السويسري، والتخلّص من ثعبان بينما كان يقود طائرة، وفقد بصره لبعض الوقت بينما كان معلّقاً خارج مركبة فضائية تدور حول الأرض.

كريس هادفيلد هو أحد روّاد الفضاء الأكثر تمرّساً وخبرة وبراعة في العالم. في مايو2013 عاد هادفيلد إلى الأرض بعدما شغل منصب قائد محطة الفضاء الدولية لخمسة أشهر (وكانت مهمته الثالثة). حلّ هادفيلد في طليعة دُفعة الخرّيجين من معهد الطيّارين الاختباريين التابع لسلاح الجو الأميركي في 1988، وحاز تقدير "الطيار الاختباري للبحرية الأميركية – 1991"؛ واختير رائد فضاء في 1992. هو أيضاً مؤلف كتاب «أنت هنا»، المكون من مجموعة صور فوتوغرافية التقطت للأرض من محطة الفضاء الدولية.
