من يعرف تلك المنطقة يُقدِّر أن تأليف كتاب هو كالنحت في الصخر أو كالمشي في حقل ألغام، وذلك بسبب تعقيدات التاريخ والجغرافيا، وتضارب الآراء والرؤى بين الطرفين الألباني والصربي. ومن هنا كان التحدي في تأليف كتاب خارج الأسطورة والأيديولوجية القومية والأوهام الأخرى وصولاً إلى رؤية واقعية أكثر عن الماضي والحاضر.
وبالنسبة إلى كتاب كهذا من الصعب أن نفهم الحاضر في كوسوفو بمعزل عن الماضي، ولذلك فقد جاء العنوان "كوسوفو ما بين الماضي والحاضر" للدلالة على أهمية الخلفية التاريخية في فهم الصورة الحاضرة في كوسوفو. فمشكلة كوسوفو تكمن في الخلاف أو النزاع على التاريخ أيضاً وليس على الأرض فقط، حيث أن لكل طرف تاريخه المختلف عن الآخر الذي هو من مكونات القومية المتصارعة مع الأخرى.
