كانت الأحلام على مدى العصور وما زالت تشغل بال الإنسان فتثير فيه مختلف الانفعالات سلباً أو إيجاباً، حتى أنها قد أوحت إلى بعض الأنبياء كما أدت إلى اكتشافات واختراعات عديدة. وتتعدد أنواع الأحلام من تحذيرية وتذكيرية واستبصارية وغيرها لدرجة أنها كرَست لنفسها مكانة خاصة وهامة في حياة الإنسان اليومية. فهي جزء من شخصيته وصورة عن حياته الغير ظاهرة للعيان، وهذا ما كشفه علم النفس التحليلي الحديث في دراسات فرويد ويونج وغيرهما، وهذ التحليل يُعوَل كثيراً على الأحلام في اكتشاف باطن الإنسان وطريقة تفكيره ومعالجته للأمور. فالأحلام حياة أخرى للإنسان لا ينبغي إغفالها إذ هي رسائل نابعة من الذات وموجَهة إلى الذات، ومرآة يرى من خلالها ما هناك من تناقضات وخوف وتمنيات وأحلام يقظة في شخصيته.
