نتيجة لبعض العوامل قد ينحرف السلوك الذي يؤديه الطفل عن ذلك السلوك الذي ترغبه الأسرة والذي تسعى إلى اكسابه لأطفالها، فيبقى سلوك غير مقبول أو يختفي سلوك يجب أن يظهر...
وهنا تبدأ الأسرة في رحلة أخرى في محاولة إصلاح هذا السلوك ومحاولة تقويمه للوصول به إلى السلوك المرغوب أو المقبول وهذا تحديداً ما يطلق عليه اصطلاح "تعديل السلوك" وفي هذا الصدد تتبع الأسرة العديد من الخطوات قد تعتمد فيها على خبرة الآخرين ممن هم حولها، مثل أسرة الوالدين، أو الأصدقاء، أو المعارف، أو تعتمد الأسرة على فكرة المحاولة والخطأ فتتبع مع الطفل أسلوباً لتعديل سلوكه، وإذا لم يؤد هذا الأسلوب إلى التحسن المطلوب، لجأت إلى غيره وأعادت التجربة مرة أخرى.
وبعض هذه المحاولات، التي قد لا تكون محسوبة في بعض الأحيان، تحدث تأثيراً سلبياً على الطفل وسلوكياته الأخرى، وكأننا هنا، بدلاً من أن نصلح سلوكاً ونعدله، نساهم في ظهور سلوك آخر غير مقبول أو نؤثر سلباً في قدرات ومهارات الطفل.
ويرجع ذلك إلى "تعديل السلوك" علم له قواعد وقوانين تختلف باختلاف السلوك المراد تعديله، والمرحلة العمرية التي يمر بها الطفل المراد تعديل سلوكه، وظروف الأسرة التي يعيش فيها الطفل، والمؤسسات الأخرى التي تعمل مع الأسرة في تشكيل سلوكيات الطفل...
ومن هنا كانت رغبتنا في إيجاد مولف شامل ويسير يكون بمثابة موجه للأسرة بلغة بسيطة تساعدهم على التعامل مع سلوكيات أطفالهم التي لا يرغبون فيها، والتقليل منها أو وصفها إن أردنا الدقة.
وسوف نتبع في ذلك شرحاً مبسطاً قدر الإمكان بالإضافة إلى وضع أمثلة توضيحية ونماذج عملية تساعد على تحقيق الهدف بصورة تتناسب مع مقومات البيئة التي يعيش فيها الطفل، وكذلك تتناسب مع إمكانيات الطفل المختلفة...
