كان منظر غرفة الطعام مثيراً للكآبة مع كل هذه الصحون الوسخة والأواني المتدلية من السقف مثل الجثث المنتشرة هنا على سبيل المثال. فضل بينوا تناول الطعام في الصالة الصغيرة للزر الذهبي. على الأقل. لا زالت جثة إيميه بروبنكور جديدة فقد تركتها لويز هنا عندما ذهبت للاستراحة. فالتحنيط على الطريقة القديمة يستغرق الكثير من الوقت. وتمتلك لويز غرفة باردة لكنها لا تستخدمها كثيراً. فجثة تأثرت بالرودة غير مهيأة كثيراً للتحنيط. الأهم قد أنجز بما أن محتويات جثة إيميه قد أفرغت وطليت بالنطرون. وتقول لويز: "كان المصريون يستغنون عن التبريد وقد وصلت مومياؤهم إلينا". اقترب بينوا من الجثمان فلا زالت أسباب انتحار شقيق سوبرب مجهولة وربما ستبقى كذلك. إعلان عن مرض عضال ومؤلم؟ هل ستحصل لويز على الدليل من خلال فحص الأعضاء الداخلية؟ إفلاس؟ يمكن الاعتقاد أن ثروة آل بروبنكور بمنأى عن كل المخاطر. هل هو بسبب حب ضائع؟ ليس هو! ليس بسبب طول العمر فلم يصب به أبداً. كان فم إيميه مغلقاً إلى الأبد ولن تخرج منه أي حقيقة أي كذبة حسب رأي بينوا. ولكن فماَ آخر سيفتح لاحقاً ليقول ما يجب أن يقال وهو واثق من ذلك.
