في "أضواء جنوبية" تدخلنا الروائية في عالم الجريمة الغامضة، في قصة مشوقة ومؤثرة في آن. يتم العثور على جثتي امرأتين شابتين في مدينة نيويورك وجدتا في حفرة صغيرة، وأخريين أخرجوا من النهر، وجثث أخرى من الولايات الأخرى، قضي نحبهن على يد قاتل محترف "لوك كانتون" بطريقة الاغتصاب والخنق. يتم تكليف "إليكسا" محامية ماهرة ومساعدة النائب العام في مكتب تحريات نيويورك بالتحقيق في القضية وإدانة المجرم. وفي طريقها إلى جمع الأدلة والتحقيق في ملابسات الجرائم المتعددة وربطها بمجرم وحيد والتي تتم بمساعدة مكتب التحقيقات الفدرالي، تواجه إليكسا رسائل تهديد أقلها حياة ابنتها الشابة "سافان" (17) عاماً وهنا تبدو إليكسا أكثر إصراراً على النجاح في القضية وإدانة المتهم. مفاجآت كثيرة، تحملها هذه الرواية عبر سلسلة من المغامرات المدهشة في رحلة البحث عن أسباب الجريمة وخصوصاً إذا ما عرفنا أن المجرم "يحب أفلام الرعب ومشاهدة النساء وهن يمتن في أثناء ممارسة العلاقات الحميمة، وأراد تجربة ذلك بنفسه عند الخروج من السجن (...) فالقاتل يحب نوعاً معيناً من النساء: المرأة الشابة الشقراء، الجميلة والطويلة والنحيلة عادة. إن العديد منهن كن عارضات أزياء أو ملكات جمال (...) لم يكن يختار النساء الرخيصات، أو يقتل الساقطات، بل كان في حالة ثورة، ويبحث عن مثال الفتاة الأميركية التي تركت وراءها أهلاً محطمين ومصدومين وغاضبين في ولايات عدة...".
