"هي قصة مرض يغش الإنسان ويسرق منه حياة شخص يحبه ويسلبها ويمتصها قطرة قطرة" هكذا عبَّر "باري" عن ذكريات حبه الدافئ الذي لم يكتمل، عندما أخبره الأطباء أن زوجته مصابة بمرض سيؤدي إلى الموت حتماً. في هذا العمل يرسم "باري" لوحة تمثل حياته تجمع كل الألوان الجميلة التي تحبها "جان" وتجاربهما وذكرياتهما وأحلامهما "... وحبنا العميق ونبرة صوتها وكيفية شعوري بها وهي بين أحضاني وكيف أحتضنها في منتصف الليل وهي نائمة..." يصفها بأنها امرأة ولدت مبتسمة لأنها لم تكن تتوقف أبداً عن الضحك، جريئة ومتوثبة النشاط والحيوية ومفعمة بالحب والحنان وسليمة الجسم ومعافاة... ولا تتعدى الخامسة والخمسين من عمرها. عندما داهمها المرض شاخصاً بقوة ليسرق منهما أحلامهما ومستقبلهما معاً بعدما مضى عشرون عاماً على زواجهما، وسرعان ما أصبح كل يوم بارداً وموحشاً لكليهما. "يطرح هذا الكتاب حكاية زوجين محبين وصادقين، وملايين من أمثالهما، أصبح لكلمة.. إلى الأبد" في حياتهما فجأة تاريخ انتهاء للصلاحية. وبالرغم من أن باري قضى حياته المهنية الطويلة الحافلة بالجوائز في التلفزيون وهو يغطي أخبار الحروب والأحداث الهامة التي صاغت تاريخ العالم... فلم يكن مهيئاً ولو حتى قليلاً لما سيصيب زوجته الغالية جان وكيف سيُحدث مرضها تأثيره المدمر على حياته". إنها أكثر من رواية هي سيرة حياة تعكس واقعاً متحركاً يشي بأن إرادة الحياة والرغبة في الاستمرار، ومواجهة المرض بشجاعة أقوى من مهاوي الوحدة واليأس، وأن أفضل علاج نقدمه لمرضانا هو الرعاية والحب الدائم. وأحلى الكلام ما ختم به "باري" روايته ليقول لنا: "لا تمسح دمعة عن خدك بل ابحث عن عبرة تضعها في ذهنك. كم من قصة حب ووفاء في الواقع تعجز الأقلام عن التعبير عنها والأوراق عن تحمل لهيبها. الوفاء جميل والحياة أيضاً لا تفاضل بينهما بل اسع إلى جمعهما معاً".
