في هذا العمل يأخذنا الروائي الدكتور "فايز رشيد" من فلسطين إلى مفصل تاريخي مهم من تاريخ بلاده السياسي والاجتماعي ليرينا فصلاً من فصول السياسة العثمانية لمرحلة ما قبل الحرب العالمية الأولى. عند الدخول إلى متن الرواية تبرز لغة الموت التي تواجه شخصيات العمل في ظل واقع مادي جالس على حافة الفناء الأخير دماراً وعذابات: "... حدثهم الأستاذ حسني عن إعدامات تركية لأحد عشر شخصاً من العرب جرت في بيروت في ساحة البرج، وعن عشرات الأحكام بالمؤبد على مناضلين عرباً من الجمعيات التحررية العربية ومن حزب اللامركزية، فقط لأنهم كانوا يطالبون بأخذ الحقوق وتطبيق اللامركزية في الحكم...". تحكي الرواية قصة "سعاد" امرأة فلسطينية، أم مثل معظم الأمهات، حنونة، عاطفية، صقلتها الحياة منذ نعومة أظفارها، وتجارب أبنائها وأحفادها في حقبات مختلفة، فَوْلَذتْها وضاعفت من قدرتها على المواجهة، إن في الوقوف بصلابة أمام الحدث، أو في تخطِّيه. امرأة واثقة في ذاتها، مليئة بالأنفة والكبرياء، بسيطة، صريحة في كل شيء، لا تعرف النفاق ولا المداهنة، واضحة، توصل شعورها وفكرتها بوضوح ودون خجل. علاقتها بزوجها رشيد ضاعفت من شعور العزة لديها. منذ طفولتها، اكتسبت قيماً كثيرة، في مجتمع ومحيط لا يقدِّران حقيقة ما تؤمن به. تماشت مع التجارب النضالية، والعطاء بكل معانيه. تماهت مع الفداء والشعور بالفلسطينية بمعناها العريض. لم تلم ولداً بسبب دوره النضالي، مما عمل على إنضاج تجربتها مبكراً. عاشت صراعاً بين حقيقتين: أهمية التضحية من أجل الوطن، والخوف كأم على حياة كل واحدٍ من أبنائها. حاولت مزج المعادلتين معاً، نجحت في معظم الأحيان وفي بعضها مثل كل الأمهات سربلتها العاطفة. إنها أكثر من رواية، إنها ملحمة نضال لشعب ما يزال تحت دورة الألم والقتل والاقتلاع والتشرد، فكانت الرواية تجسيداً لإرادة البقاء ودعوة للتغيير، ومراجعة لتاريخ القضية الفلسطينية وقراءتها بعين فاحصة...
