تصف رواية "السيدة ماريا غروبة" التغييرات التي طرأت على حياة امرأة أرستقراطية مرّت بثلاثة تحولات طبقية بعد زواجها من ابن الملك، ثم من أحد ملاكي الأراضي، وبعدها من سائس الخيول في العزبة التي تقطن فيها، وكانت في كل من تلك الزيجات تتبع قلبها لا غير.
