تحكي رواية "الحب الأبدي"، للروائي جايمي فورد قصة حب الفتى (هنري)، مراهق أمريكي من أصل صيني، وفتاة مراهقة أمريكية من أصل ياباني (كايكو)، جرت أحداثها في أثناء الحرب العالمية الثانية، في ظل سياسات مختلفة (محاور وأحلاف) أثرت أحداث الحرب على بلدي الشابين فكان للظروف القاسية والصعبة تأثيرها على الحب الذي جمعهما.
افترقا سنوات عدّة بسبب اعتقال اليابانيين في معسكرات خاصة في أمريكا، وكل منهما واجه مصيره وأكمل حياته الخاصة.
وبعد انتهاء الحرب واستسلام اليابان، كان (هنري) قد تزوج، وأنجب ولد وحيد (مارتي) من زوجته (إيثيل) التي خسرها بسبب مرض السرطان.
أما (كايكو) فإنها تزوجت وأنجبت أولاداً وأحفاداً، وهي بدورها فقدت زوجها.
عند الانتهاء من قراءة الرواية يتأكد لنا أن حبّ المراهقة - أي الحبّ الأول –الذي يوقظ ويحرك المشاعر الإنسانية الأولى للبشر، لا يمكن أن يتلاشى وينقطع، يبقى حاضناً كل لحظاته وأحاسيسه مع كل مستجدات الحياة، عابراً السنين، متغلغلاً في الروح حتى آخر العمر.
