و”نور بين محيطين” نص روائي حافل بالأحداث والوقائع، يمتلك القدرة على الاستقطاب، فلا تملك إلاّ أن تتابعه من البداية إلى النهاية ومن دون أن تسقط في حضن الملل. فما الذي يقوله هذا النص؟ ومن أين له هذه القدرة على الجذب؟
منذ العبارة الأولى “… ولا توقعنا في الإغراء، لكن نجنّا من الشرير” التي تسوقها المؤلفة على لسان الراوية/ البطلة تفلح في إثارة الانتباه، فنحن أمام ظرف خاص: “طفل! يا الله! أوه يا توم! توم! هيا – أعطني إياه!”.
وعوداً على بدء: بعد أربع سنوات مروّعة أمضاها على الجبهة الشرقية، يعود توم شربورن إلى أستراليا، ويحظى بوظيفة عامل منارة لإرشاد السفن على صخرة جانوس التي تبعد مسافة رحلة نصف يوم تقريباً عن الساحل، إلى هذه الجزيرة المعزولة، حيث يصل مركب مؤن مرة في الموسم، يُحضر “توم” زوجة شابة، وجريئة، ومملوءة حيوية؛ هي “إيزابيل” التي كانت قد تعرضت لحالتي إجهاض وولادة طفل ميت. في هذه الأثناء، تسمع إيزابيل الكئيبة صرخات طفلة تنقلها الريح كانت الأمواج قد جرفت إلى الشاطئ مركباً يحملها على متنه إضافة إلى رجل ميت.
“توم” ابن الحرب المروعة والذي صمدت مبادئه على الرغم من بشاعة ما مرّ به، أصرّ على إرسال تقرير عن الرجل والرضيعة فوراً، لكن إيزابيل تصرّ على أن الطفلة “هبة من الله”، وتزعم، ضد إرادة توم، أنها ابنتها وتسميها لوسي.
عندما تبلغ الصغيرة الثانية من العمر، يعود توم وزوجته إيزابيل إلى البر الرئيس، ويتذكر أن هناك أشخاصاً آخرين في العالم فقدا الطفلة، في تلك اللحظة فقط أدرك الزوجان أن خيارهما قد دمّر حياة أشخاص أبرياء.
